Year-End Accounts
Statutory accounts, also known as year-end accounts, are a set of financial reports prepared for a specific time and completed at the end of each financial year. In the UK, all private limited companies (“Limited” or Ltd), public limited companies (“Plc”) and limited liability partnerships (“LLP”) companies are required to prepare statutory accounts.
A statutory account does not include every last bit of detail, such as unique expenses or invoices. Instead, it is produced to form a statement of the company’s overall spending.
Statutory reports offer an invaluable overview of business finance. They help the business owner understand daily operational costs by showing the profit that includes all adjustments made at the end of the year, deductions, taxes, payroll, etc.

Management Accounts
Management accounts are not mandatory and do not need to be completed to official time frames or deadlines, only those stipulated by the business. They help plan for the future, allowing you to adjust the direction your business is taking based on specific successes and failures.
Management accounts are an invaluable resource when it comes to choosing a strategy and direction.
Unlike statutory accounts, they do not need to follow specific layout and are much better at providing forecasts and planning for the future. These statements can be tailored to specific time frames and types of income / expenses in order to improve future income and expenses.

Bookkeeping
Bookkeeping is the daily recording of financial transactions and information related to a business. It ensures that the records of individual financial transactions are correct, up-to-date and comprehensive. Accuracy is therefore crucial to the process.
As bookkeepers, we help our clients be aware of their current financial position, as well as the transactions that occur within the company.

Payroll, CIS and Auto-enrolment
Payroll is the process of paying salary to a company’s employees. It starts with preparing a list of employees to be paid and ends with recording those expenses. At Front Edge Accountants we take care of every stage of this process.
The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is a scheme that works by contractors taking money from their subcontractor’s wages in order to cover their tax and National Insurance contributions.
CIS is important for the construction business, because it protects construction workers from being employed illegally and taken advantage of. The types of work that are considered ‘construction’ include:
- Groundwork
- General building (bricklaying, plastering and so on)
- Alterations, repairs and decorating
- Building demolition and dismantling
- Installing systems for heating, lighting, power, water and ventilation
- Cleaning the inside of buildings after construction work
CIS does not apply to certain jobs, including:
- Architectural services
- Surveying
- Carpet fitting
- Scaffolding hire (with no labour)
- Delivering building supplies and materials
- People who work on construction sites but are not part of the construction industry (canteen workers etc.)
Auto enrolment is a government initiative under which employers in the United Kingdom are legally obliged to establish a pension at work, to include all their qualified employees in it and to contribute to their pension savings.
To qualify for auto enrolment, you must meet certain criteria:
- You must be aged between 22 and state pension age
- You must earn more than £10,000 from that job
- You must work in the UK

VAT
Value added tax (VAT) applies to the purchase price of certain goods, services and other taxable supplies that are bought and sold within the UK. It is consistent with, but now distinct from, the system of VAT that operates within the European Union. There are 3 rates of VAT chargeable in the UK:
• The standard rate charges 20% and applies to most goods and services
• The reduced rate charges 5% and applies to some goods and services such as home energy, children’s car seats, residential property conversions, etc.
• The rate charges 0% and applies to most foods and children’s clothing
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £85,000 in any 12 months period.
At Front Edge Accountants, we will guide you through the entire registration and accounting process afterwards.
