Self Assessment Tax Return
Self Assessment is a system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax. A Self Assessment Tax Return is used to calculate how much tax you owe from the earnings you declare on the form. You do not owe a tax in all cases, in some situations you could be entitled to a tax rebate.
Anyone who is self-employed must fill in the tax return form, but there are other circumstances that mean you legally need to complete a tax return. Common reasons include:

Having work expenses of over, £2500 in any tax year. For example, many people use their own cars for business use and do not know that they can claim mileage tax relief for some, or even all, of their work-related trips.

In most cases, if you are non-resident and have rental income in the UK, a tax return is required. Depending on whether you have paid tax on your rental income, you may be entitled to tax relief on the tax paid.
The deadline for both submission and payment of any taxes due is usually 31 January.
